Stefanie Elwood has a BA in English and an MA in Composition and Rhetoric. She is credentialed to teach English and adult education and has taught at the high school and college levels. Her conversational teaching style appeals to a wide range of personalities and abilities. Many students call her instruction transformational. She generously shares many tricks of the trade. Stefanie firmly believes that composing the perfect paper requires deep analysis, organizational skills, creativity, an authorial voice (sometimes referred to as attitude!), and excellent fine-tune editing. She will tell you not to take a quote to the dance if you aren’t going to show her off on the dance floor. She will suggest starting with a working thesis, composing the body paragraphs next, the introduction after that and then the title. Editing must be done last and should nearly double the time investment in the paper. Many have referred to this grueling but highly effective process as “Elwooding” a paper.
No single quote sums up an appreciation for reading better than Harper Lee’s Scout Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, who once said, “Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.” Stefanie would attribute this same attitude to writing. Though the task
may seem arduous and daunting, writing becomes a part of one’s character and personality. Stefanie indulges this practice by expostulating in educational journal articles and by exploring a variety of positive topics for the Education Section of See Beyond Magazine.
When not immersed in teaching, writing, and editing, Stefanie loves to spend time with her husband, Dan, binge-watching TV shows like Breaking Bad, Monk, and Longmire. Their feisty dog, Puma (sometimes called the holy terrier), takes them for walks every day. The newest addition to the Elwood household is a cat that came back the very next day, and the next, and the next after that, and finally just stayed. She is Precious. The Elwoods take long vacations, visiting family all over the Midwest. Between these trips, Hawaii is a favorite destination. They also partake in ballroom dancing and discussing politics, but not simultaneously.
